On 17-20 September 2024, a training of trainers within the TAAO (Together Against Antigypsyism Online) project took place in Varna, Bulgaria. The main goal of the meeting was to prepare young Roma leaders from different European countries to effectively fight against antigypsyism, hate speech and for human rights.
During the training, participants explored national policies on antigypsyism and discrimination, learned about the possibilities of reporting hate speech and legal tools they can use in practice. They also discussed prejudices and causes of antigypsyism. An important aspect of the programme was the exchange of experiences, networking and sharing plans for their own projects. The last day of the training was dedicated to concrete actions and further plans for the education of young Roma in their home countries.
"This training gave me concrete tools to fight discrimination. It is essential for young Roma to know what discrimination is, because that is the only way they can fight back," said Alina from Romania.
"Young people should fight against antigypsyism so that they have equal opportunities and are treated equally. That's why I came to this training," added Natalie from the Czech Republic.
The TAAO project creates a network of young Roma who, thanks to their newly acquired skills, can work together to fight discrimination and spread awareness of antigypsyism in their communities. This initial training will be followed by trainings in other partner countries where young Roma will further support their peers and spread awareness on human rights and the fight against antigypsyism.
