The Case for Safer Digital Spaces for the Roma Youth by Empowering Them to Act Online hate speech is one of the major impediments to equality and inclusion, especially for marginalized groups such as the Roma. TAAO, which stands for Together against antigypsyism online, is an initiative that addresses the issue by equipping young Roma with the tools and knowledge necessary to monitor and report harmful content.
In the two months, young people in five countries have been actively monitoring online platforms, identifying more than 400 cases of antigypsyist hate speech. It's work that keeps the pressure on digital platforms and makes sure they don't allow really bad content to exist online.
How You Can Help?
Individual action powers change. Reporting on social media platforms is among the easiest and most powerful things individuals can do in fighting against hate speech. We need unity to monitor what the platforms say and do next to effect accountability. Has the content:
- Removed?
- Under Review?
- Ignored?
Why It Matters
Antigypsyist hate speech perpetuates harmful stereotypes, fuels social exclusion, and fosters discrimination. Tackling this issue is not only a matter of protecting the rights and dignity of Roma individuals but also one of creating an inoffensive and respectful online environment for all.
Join the Movement
Report harmful content. Monitor changes in platform responses. Advocate for safer, more inclusive digital spaces. Together, we can challenge antigypsyism, promote diversity, and hold platforms accountable for online safety.
How You Can Get Involved
You don’t need to be part of an organization to help. Here’s what you can do:
- Report antigypsyist content directly on the platform where you see it (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok).
- Note the platform’s response—was the post removed, ignored, or marked as reviewed?
- Talk about it—let others know this kind of content isn’t acceptable.
- If the post is particularly serious or breaks the law (e.g. threats or hate speech), you can also report it to your country’s equality body:
- Czech Republic: Office of the Ombudsman – diskriminace@ochrance.cz
- Slovakia: Slovak National Centre for Human Rights – info@snslp.sk
- Hungary: Commissioner for Fundamental Rights – panasz@ajbh.hu
- Romania: National Council for Combating Discrimination – sesizare@cncd.org.ro
- Germany: Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency – beratung@ads.bund.de
- Bulgaria: Commission for Protection against Discrimination – kzd@kzd.bg
Every report counts.
